October 11, 2013.

Today is a day that is as important to some people as celebrating a birthday. Today is a day that affirms and empowers identity. Today is a day that gives some people who once felt like they had no voice, a voice – their voice. Today is National Coming Out Day and this year’s theme is “Coming Out Still Matters.”

I have something to tell you all that I don’t think I’ve ever publicly said. I’m not sure why I haven’t because I am fairly certain most of my friends, family, and classmates already know (or assume) where I stand. But, if today is National Coming Out Day, it kind of applies to those who support it, too. So, I fully support marriage equality and I am a proponent of the Human Rights Campaign.

Let me be clear. I do NOT want to hear any negative push-back. OK? OK. Also, I am not seeking the limelight. I hope it opens a window of opportunity for others. Maybe the window of opportunity for some is in the form of continuing to wrestle with what stance to take and why. Maybe the window of opportunity for some is to reconcile a broken relationship. Maybe the window of opportunity for some is to start chipping away that negative perception of people, who in actuality, are somewhat or unfortunately completely misunderstood – and that goes both ways.

If anything, think about what today means for SO. MANY. PEOPLE.  But if you see that window of opportunity, I dare you to jump through it and do good that is rooted in love.

That’s all for now.

(See Micah 6:8; Mark 12:30-31, cf Matthew 22:37-39. For “neighbor” reference the Good Samaritan. Or realize it is anyone who isn’t you.)

Blessings and good vibes,

Maggie
